Me too, they aren't actually a lot slower than regular MTB's. But they do look mighty cool
I've said it before, and I'll say it many more times: I LOVE my Surly Krampus 29x3. Splits the difference between a faster trail bike and a fatbike. I'm convinced it cruises most trails as fast as a comparable dual-suspension.
In fact, my son's outgrowing his 20" 1-speed, and I really have my eye on one of these little Specialized fatbikes. Will make trails much easier on an inexperienced rider.
They look brilliant fun
I saw a test this year on Youtube and indeed both a conventional MTB and a Fatbike had similar "laptimes".
But the big tires look so much more fun
